The process:
Handbuilt bowl in white raku clay, with the first firing to 1000 degrees in an electric kiln. Obvara, sometimes called Baltic Raku, is an eastern european firing tecnique originating in the Baltic region. The hot piece of pottery is taken out of the kiln and quickly immersed into a fermented liquid made with water, flour, yeast and sugar. The magic is in the patterns that form haphazardly on the surface without any control by the maker. These are original and unique pieces. They are sealed with liquid quartz so they are also functional for use. The technique calls more for use as a decorative item to show off the beautiful markings on all sides.
